《그 사이의 숨》

피어나는 순간보다 사라지기 직전의 숨이 더 깊게 남는 시간이 있다. 완전히 드러나지도, 완전히 사라지지도 않은 채 잠시 머무는 찰나의 상태. 《그 사이의 숨》은 바로 그 경계의 시간에 대한 사유에서 출발한다.

이종만의 회화는 생명의 절정을 붙들기보다, 스러짐을 앞둔 미세한 떨림에 시선을 둔다. 화면에 등장하는 꽃과 새는 화려한 개화나 비상의 장면이 아니다. 이미 시간을 통과한 뒤, 소멸을 향해 기울어가는 존재들이다. 그것들은 더 이상 자신을 과시하지 않는다. 대신 낮게 가라앉은 밀도로, 고요하지만 팽팽한 긴장을 품은 채 서 있다.

작가는 대상을 재현하기보다 그 순간에 스쳐간 감정과 기척을 붓질의 호흡으로 옮긴다. 날리듯 이어지는 터치는 형상을 붙드는 동시에 흩트린다. 구상은 분명 존재하지만 끝내 고정되지 않고, 추상은 해체처럼 보이지만 완전히 무화되지는 않는다. 화면은 인식과 해체, 생성과 소멸의 경계를 진동하며 머문다.

이 과정에서 대상은 점차 색채와 터치, 리듬으로 환원된다. 무엇을 그렸는가보다 어떻게 흔들리고 어떻게 사라져 가는가가 중요해진다. 물감의 질료는 생의 흔적처럼 화면 위에 남고, 붓질의 궤적은 하나의 숨처럼 응결된다. 형상은 희미해지지만, 그 자리에 남는 것은 오히려 더욱 응축된 시간의 밀도다.

《그 사이의 숨》은 삶과 소멸 사이, 구상과 추상 사이에 놓인 미세한 틈을 응시한다. 그것은 극적인 장면이 아니라, 우리가 쉽게 지나쳐온 ‘사이’의 시간이다. 이번 전시는 회화가 붙들 수 있는 가장 섬세한 생의 순간 사라지기 직전의 숨을 통해 존재의 깊이를 다시 묻는다.

There are moments when the breath just before disappearance lingers more deeply than the moment of full bloom. A fleeting state that neither fully reveals itself nor completely fades away, but briefly hovers in suspension. Between Breaths begins from a contemplation of this liminal time.

Jongman Lee’s paintings do not attempt to hold onto the peak of life; instead, they turn their gaze toward the subtle tremor that precedes dissolution. The flowers and birds that appear on his canvases are not scenes of radiant blossoming or soaring flight. They are beings that have already passed through time, now inclining toward disappearance. No longer asserting themselves, they stand with a subdued density, carrying a quiet yet taut tension.

Rather than reproducing his subjects, the artist translates the emotions and faint traces that brushed past those moments into the breathing rhythm of his brushstrokes. His fleeting touches both gather form and let it disperse. Figuration clearly exists, yet it never fully settles; abstraction appears dismantled, yet it is never entirely nullified. The surface lingers in vibration along the threshold between perception and dissolution, between emergence and extinction.

In this process, the subject gradually resolves into color, touch, and rhythm. What matters is not what has been depicted, but how it quivers and how it recedes. The materiality of paint remains on the canvas like a trace of life, and the trajectory of each brushstroke condenses into a single breath. As the image fades, what endures instead is a more concentrated density of time.

Between Breaths contemplates the subtle interval between life and extinction, between figuration and abstraction. It is not a dramatic spectacle, but the easily overlooked span of “in-between” time. Through the breath just before disappearance—the most delicate instant painting can hold—this exhibition once again asks about the depth of existence.

《누군가의 끝, 누군가의 시작》

누군가의 끝, 누군가의 시작은
하나의 끝이 다른 시작과 분리될 수 없음을 전제한 작가의 변용(變容)과 전환(轉換)의 미학이다. 끝은 소멸이 아니라 전환이며, 시작은 새로움이 아닌 이어짐에 가깝다.

여기서 ‘누군가’는 특정함을 지칭하지 않는다. 작가, 관람객, 공간, 혹은 화면에서 사라진 감정 그 자체일 수도 있기에 신체를 매개로 한 감정의 밀도와 내면의 사유가 여백과 움직임의 흔적으로 마주한다. 이는 무질서한 논리적 흐름으로 교차됨과 동시에 무아(無我)와 연기(緣起)로 끊임없이 변화하고 생성된다.

구분되지 않는 끝과 시작이 겹쳐지고, 스며들며 이어지는 존재의 다층적 언어로 이행시키는 구조가 이안 리 작가의 작품에서 명확한 결론을 얻기보다는 감각이 새롭게 확장되는 경험으로 전시를 마주하는 관람 포인트가 될것이다.
