신에게 누군가 기도를 드렸을 때, 그의 대답하는 방법은 세 가지라고 한다. 하나는 “YES”, 두번째는 “NO”, 세번째 “기다리라”는 것이다. 이 중 세번째 대답의 과정이 힘겨운 이유는 양립하기 어려운 ‘기다림’과 ‘조급함’이라는 두 마음이 공존하는 까닭이다.


2년 전, 아이를 바라는 마음이 담긴 최승윤, 조정은 작가의 전시 <하나 둘, 셋>은 많은 사람들에게 울림을 주었다. 이후 그들은 2년의 시간 동안, 신이 주신 세 번째 과정을 함께, 오롯이 견뎠다. 그리고 그들의 작품 안에 단추로 표현된 존재, 그들의 아기 “행복이”는 전시가 끝날 무렵 세상에 태어날 예정이다.


작가에게 작업은 출산과 비슷한 감정을 느끼게 한다. 고뇌의 시간과 그 시간을 응집해서 보여주는 에너지는 생명의 탄생에 버금가는 순간이다. 작품의 배경이 되어주는 최승윤 작가의 추상작업은 인간이 가지고 있는 근본적인 에너지를 가감 없이 보여준다. 이런 힘의 바탕에는, 하나하나 설명할 수 없는 수많은 감정들을 캔버스에 담아내고자 하는 작가의 노고가 숨겨져 있다. 사라져 가는 것에 주목하며 그에 대해 애정을 가지고 작업하는 조정은 작가의 세필화가 더해진 화폭은 감정과 감정이 더해져, 이번 전시에서는 우리가 느낄 기다림과 환희 더 나아가 책임감과 두려움에 대한 이야기도 담겨 있다.


모든 일은 지나고 보면 다 이유가 있다. 개인적으로 쉽지 않았을 일련의 과정들과 결과는 현시대를 살아가는 사람들에게 조금은 특별하지만 보편적인 진리를 선사하는 듯하다. 끝으로, 이 글을 통해 작가님들께 축하를 전한다. 그리고 이 자리에 오신 관람객분들도 각자의 행복을 상기하고, 그 행복이 삶을 살아가는 힘이 되길 응원하는 전시이길 바란다.

Where Happiness Arrives

When someone offers a prayer to God, it is said that there are three possible answers: “Yes,” “No,” and “Wait.” Of the three, the most difficult to endure is the last. That’s because within “waiting” often reside two conflicting emotions—hopeful patience and urgent restlessness—coexisting in tension.

Two years ago, the joint exhibition <One, Two, Three> by artist Jung Eun Jo and Seung yoon Choi, born out of a shared longing for a child, resonated deeply with many. Since then, they have walked together through the path of waiting—the third kind of divine answer—wholeheartedly and without turning away. Now, as this exhibition comes to a close, the presence represented by a small button in their work—their baby, Haengboki ("Happiness")—is expected to enter the world.

For the artist, the act of creation bears emotional resemblance to childbirth. The time of contemplation and the energy condensed into a single canvas hold the weight and wonder of new life. Seungyoon Choi’s abstract works, which serve as the backdrop of this exhibition, reveal a raw and essential human energy. Behind this force lies the quiet labor of an artist striving to express countless unspoken feelings on canvas.

Jung Eun Jo’s work, on the other hand, pays attention to what is fading. Her delicate brushstrokes, layered with affection and care, come together with Choi’s abstractions to form a shared emotional terrain. In this exhibition, their works convey not only waiting and joy, but also responsibility and fear, emotions that often accompany the arrival of new life.

In hindsight, everything happens for a reason. What was undoubtedly a difficult journey for the artists becomes, in this moment, a quiet offering of truth—both unique and universal—to those living through their own present.
