지난 2023년 삼세영 갤러리는 에든버러 아트페어(EAF)에 참여하는 새로운 도전을 합니다. 에든버러(Edinburgh)는 문화에 대해 보수적이면서도 전통을 고수하는 곳이지만, 한국의 작가를 알리고자 하는 삼세영 갤러리의 열정에는 지역적 제한이 존재하지 않았습니다. 이에 6명 작가의 작품을 직접 들고 떠난 여정은 쉽지 않았지만, 한국 예술을 알리는데 큰 기여를 하였습니다.

그 곳, 에든버러에서 만난 작가가 2025년 7월 삼세영과 함께하는 Moy Mackay와 한영주 작가입니다.

Moy Mackay는 스코틀랜드 출신 작가로 섬유 예술의 경계를 확장시키며 전 세계적으로 인정받고 있는 “펠트 페인팅”의 선구자입니다. 회화와 섬유를 결합한 독창적인 기법으로 회화적 깊이와 따뜻함을 동시에 표현하는 작품을 선보입니다. 강력한 색채 감각과 풍부한 질감으로 예술성과 장인 정신을 동시에 구현하며, 장인 정신(craft)과 순수미술(fine art)의 경계를 허무는데 기여하였습니다.

한영주는 25년째 에딘버러에서 활동하는 한국 출신 작가로, 한 인간으로서 느끼는 고독감과 무상함을 스코틀랜드의 자연 속에 조영하여 작품을 창조합니다. 그녀의 풍경화는 자연과 감정의 조화를 담고 있으며, 색과 질감을 통해 그 순간의 심리적 변화를 표현합니다. 이번 전시는 그녀만의 독특한 색감으로 그린 스코틀랜드 사계절의 아름다움을 보여 줍니다.

같은 스코틀랜드라는 작품의 모티브 안에서도 작가 개개인의 다른 구현을 통해 우리는 작가의 생각과 영감에 공감하며, 더 나아가 세밀한 감정까지 통찰하고자 합니다. 더불어 에든버러에서 시작된 인연이 여기 한국 삼세영 갤러리에까지 이어지게 된 놀라운 경험에 함께 해주시길 바랍니다.

In 2023, Samseyoung Gallery embarked on a bold new journey by participating in the Edinburgh Art Fair (EAF). Although Edinburgh is widely known for its cultural conservatism and deep-rooted traditions, Samseyoung gallery’s passion for introducing Korean artists knew no boundaries. Carrying the works of six artists across continents was no easy feat, but it made a significant contribution to promoting Korean contemporary art abroad.

It was in Edinburgh that Samseyoung Gallery met the two artists now featured in the upcoming July 2025 exhibition: Moy Mackay and Han, Yeung joo.

Moy Mackay, a Scotland-based artist, is an internationally recognized pioneer of felt painting, a technique that merges fine art with textile craftsmanship. Her work transcends traditional fiber art, combining painterly depth and warmth through vivid colors and rich textures. With her bold artistic language, she blurs the boundaries between fine art and craft, redefining what textile-based art can be.

Han, Yeung joo, a Korean-born artist who has lived and worked in Edinburgh for the past 25 years, explores solitude and impermanence through the natural landscapes of Scotland. Her evocative paintings harmonize nature with emotion, using color and texture to capture subtle psychological states. In this exhibition, she presents the beauty of the Scottish seasons, interpreted through her unique palette and perspective.

Though both artists draw inspiration from the landscapes of Scotland, their distinct approaches offer us a glimpse into their inner worlds. Through their works, we are invited not only to understand their thoughts and inspirations, but also to engage with delicate emotional nuances.
